FSSAI, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is an autonomous organization established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. They were established with the intention of protecting the health of the public under the supervision of food safety measures regulation of India, to ensure the quality of the food against adulteration and additives. These bodies play a key role in setting the norms, rules and regulations that are to be followed by every food business in India.
It is a 14-digit registration number that is printed on all the food packages, tins and products that provides details assembling state, producers permit.
Who should register under FSSAI?
It is mandatory for every food business, manufacturers and dealers to mandatorily register under the Foods and Standards Authority of India. This includes Petty retailers, bakery shop owners, retailers, hawkers, temporary and small shop holders, dairy units, wholesaler, distributor and supplier of food products, caterer, meat and fish processing units, vegetable and seed oil processing units, slaughtering houses and cafeterias whose annual turnover is less than 12 lacs. Any other food business unit whose annual income is more than 12 lacs has to obtain mandatory license along with registering under FSSAI.
How to register under FSSAI, online?
Every food business operator shall register online by filing and submitting an application form by paying Rs.100.
- Filing of an Application in Form A along with the fees - The Application has to filed by attesting necessary documents mentioned below for proof identity, which will be uploaded online in the FoSCos portal; and submitted to the Food and Safety Department along with the application physically.
- A Unique Reference number will be generated - The Registering authority may accept or reject the registration application form within 7 days from the date of receipt of the application either physically or virtually.
If the application form is accepted, then the business operator may start his business on the receipt of his approval.
If the application form is rejected the same will be intimated in writing along with reasonable reasons.
- The department on such intimation will inspect the order within 7 days. - If the department is satisfied on such inspection, a registration certificate is successfully generated along with the registration number by logging into the portal.
After the completion of the download of the certificate, the Food Business Operator may start their business.

List of Products manufactured and processed.
Bank Account Details.
Supporting documents like NOC by Municipality or Panchayat, Health NOC, copy of license from the manufacturer.
