Import Export Code (IEC) Registration: Complete Process Guide for Businesses
Want to Import or Export? IEC is Your Passport to International Trade – Get It in 1 to 3 Days
The Problem: Businesses Unable to Start International Trade
A handicraft business in Jaipur received a ₹12 lakh export order from a UK-based retailer. Excited, he shipped the products to the Mumbai port for export. At customs, his shipment was blocked. The customs officer said, "Where is your IEC number? You cannot export anything without the Import Export Code." The businessmen had never heard about IEC. He had to return the shipment, lost the international client who moved to another supplier, paid ₹45,000 in transportation and storage costs, and missed a major business opportunity. All because of a missing IEC registration that costs just ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 and takes 1 to 3 days to obtain.
Common Misconceptions About IEC: Many business owners believe only large companies need IEC for international trade, assume IEC is expensive and requires complex documentation, think they can export small quantities without IEC, don't know IEC is mandatory even for service exports in some cases, and delay IEC registration until they get their first order, causing shipment delays. These myths cost businesses lakhs in lost opportunities and customs penalties.
What You Cannot Do Without IEC: You cannot export any goods from India to foreign countries, import raw materials, machinery, or finished goods from abroad, receive payments from foreign clients for exports through banking channels, claim benefits under Foreign Trade Policy like duty drawbacks and export incentives, open letters of credit or foreign currency accounts for trade, or participate in international trade fairs and exhibitions as an exporter. Essentially, IEC is the first mandatory step for any business wanting to trade internationally.
The Solution: Understanding Import Export Code
Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit unique business identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce. It's mandatory for any individual, proprietorship, partnership, LLP, or company engaged in the import or export of goods or services. Think of IEC as your international trade license; without it, customs won't allow your shipments to cross borders.
Who Needs IEC Registration? You must obtain IEC if you're exporting products manufactured in India to international markets, importing raw materials, machinery, or goods from other countries, providing services to foreign clients and receiving payment in foreign currency, or engaged in both import and export activities. IEC is required regardless of business size – whether you're a solo entrepreneur or a large corporation. Interestingly, one IEC is sufficient for all your import-export activities across products and countries. You don't need separate IECs for different products or different ports.
Who Doesn't Need IEC? Certain entities are exempt, including individuals importing or exporting for personal use (not business), government departments and ministries, and entities notified by DGFT for specific purposes. However, if you're conducting business transactions, even small-scale exports, you need IEC.
Benefits of IEC Registration: IEC provides legal authorization to import and export goods and services internationally, enables you to receive export payments directly from foreign buyers through banking channels, allows you to claim various export incentives and benefits under Foreign Trade Policy including duty drawback, MEIS, SEIS, and EPCG schemes, helps open letters of credit and foreign currency accounts with banks, enables participation in international trade shows and exhibitions, and builds credibility with foreign buyers and suppliers showing you're a recognized exporter/importer.
The Process: How to Get IEC Registration
Step 1: Determine Eligibility and Gather Information. Ensure you have a registered business entity (proprietorship, partnership, LLP, or company) with a PAN card and a current bank account. Decide on the business entity that will conduct import/export activities. Gather current bank account details, including account number, IFSC code, and bank branch address, with a cancelled cheque or bank statement.
Step 2: Register on the DGFT Portal. Visit the official DGFT website at dgft.gov.in. Click on "Online IEC Application" and create an account with your email and mobile number. Verify your email and mobile through OTP. Log in to the portal and select the "Apply for IEC" option.
Step 3: Fill out the online application. Enter applicant details, including business name as per PAN, PAN number (which auto-validates with the income tax database), address of business premises or registered office, nature of business (manufacturer, trader, service provider), and contact details (email, phone). Provide bank account information, including account holder name (must match business name), bank account number, IFSC code, and branch address. Upload required documents in PDF or JPEG format, including PAN card, business registration proof, bank cancelled cheque, and a photograph of the applicant/authorised person. Select the branch office details if you have multiple locations where import/export will happen.
Step 4: Pay Application Fee. The IEC application fee is approximately. ₹500 (reduced from earlier ₹1,000) paid online through net banking, debit/credit card, or UPI. Generate the payment challan and make payment through the portal. Save the payment receipt for your records.
Step 5: Submit Application. Review all entered details carefully before final submission, as corrections later require amendments. Submit the application electronically and receive an acknowledgement number via email. The acknowledgement contains your application reference number for tracking status.
Step 6: Track and Receive IEC. Track your application status on the DGFT portal using the acknowledgement number. DGFT processes applications typically within 1-3 working days. If documents are in order, your IEC is issued and sent to your registered email. Download the IEC certificate from the DGFT portal. The IEC is a 10-digit number that's your permanent import-export identification and has lifetime validity with no renewal required.
Step 7: Update IEC for Annual Filing. While IEC has no expiry, you must update your IEC details annually on the DGFT portal between April 1 and June 30 each year. This update is called "ANF-1" (Aayaat Niryaat Form). Log in to the DGFT portal, select "File ANF-1," update any changes in business details like address or bank account, and submit. This annual filing is free with no charges.
Approximate Cost Breakdown
The government fee for an IEC application is approximately. ₹500 to ₹1,000 (official DGFT charge). There are no additional government charges. If you take professional assistance, CA or consultant fees for IEC registration cost range from ₹1,500 to ₹3,000, including application filling, document verification, and submission. The total cost for complete IEC registration with professional help is ₹2,000 to ₹3,000. This is a one-time cost with lifetime validity. Compare this to the lakhs you can earn through international trade, and IEC becomes one of the most cost-effective business registrations.
Documents Required for IEC
For proprietorships, you need a proprietor's PAN card, Aadhaar card or passport, recent passport-size photograph, business address proof (rent agreement, electricity bill, or property documents), and a bank cancelled cheque with account details. For partnerships, you'll need a partnership firm PAN card, a partnership deed, PAN cards of all partners, a bank certificate, and an authorised partner's photograph and ID proof. For LLPs and companies, gather the company PAN card, certificate of incorporation, MoA and AoA, bank certificate with account details, and the authorised signatory's details with photograph and ID. Across all entities, the bank certificate must clearly mention the account holder's name, the matching business name, account number, IFSC code, and branch address.
